Unit 2: Upload and Store Files
Unit Objectives:
- Learners will be able to upload files to Drive from their computer.
- Learners will be able to down load files from Drive to their computer.
- Learners will be able to open files and work on them.
- Learners will be able to delete files they are not working on and restore files from Trash if they accidentally deleted the files.
Upload Files to Drive
Here we are going to see how to upload files from the computer to Drive. In this unit we will be focussing on Drive on the web or the cloud as it was mentioned in Unit 1. There are 2 methods in which you can upload files to drive.
- You can drag and drop files from your computer to Drive
- Upload files using the New button on the drive.

Download files from Drive
Follow the instructions below to download files from your Google Drive to your computer.
- In Google Drive, select the file you want to download.
- On the Option Bar, select More actions.
- In the drop-down menu select Download.
- Select the folder on your computer where you want to save the file, then click Save.
You can also double click the file that you want to download and select the download command button.
Open files and Work on them
You have 15GB of free storage space on Google Drive to upload files from your computer and store them in cloud. The files that you upload to Drive need not belong to the Google Drive suite. You can upload any type of file for storage purpose. Among these files there are :
In the file types that you can preview there are few file types that you can open and edit using google Drive. You can open and edit certain files that are created using Microsoft Office Suite by converting them into Google docs, sheets and slides. You can also open and edit PDF files by converting them to Google docs. When you convert files for editing be mindful that you might lose formatting and information from the original file. so it is a good idea to check your converted files before sharing it with others.
In the video below you can see how to convert a Microsoft Powerpoint file to Google Slides and make edits to it. Also, you will see how to convert a PDF file to Google Docs and you will also learn about some of the issues you face when you convert PDF format to Google Docs.

- files that you cannot preview. For example, Microsoft Access database file cannot be previewed.

Delete Files
To delete files from drive:
- Select the file to be deleted by clicking on it. If you are deleting multiple files you can keep the Shift or Ctrl (Command for Mac) key pressed on the keyboard to select more than one file.
- Click on the Remove button on the options bar. The deleted files are moved into Trash folder.
Files that are accidentally deleted and moved to Trash folder can be restored by first selecting the file and clicking Restore in the options bar. If you have confidential files or for some reason you want to permanently delete files, when you are in the Trash folder, select the file and click Delete forever from the options bar.
